Hazardous Waste Management
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) must abide by federal, provincial and local regulations with respect to hazardous waste management. These regulations exist to protect human health, the environment, as well as TRU’s building, drain and sewer infrastructure.
What does this mean for you?
- No employee or student will dispose of any potentially hazardous or toxic materials without first consulting with their leadership and Risk and Safety Services (RSS).
- Disposal of hazardous materials down the drain is prohibited.
- All hazardous materials designated for disposal must be properly labeled and packaged in suitable containers.
- Every person who may use, handle or dispose of wastes, must be informed of the proper methods of disposal and has the responsibility to comply with the law.
TRU contracts chemical and biohazardous waste removal and disposal to qualified waste disposal companies.
Chemical waste disposal takes place in spring and winter. RSS will email hazardous waste generators in advance to allow for departments to organize their waste for pick up. All waste requiring disposal must be added to the Waste Tracking spreadsheet in advance of the pick-up date. If the waste is not in the spreadsheet it will not be disposed of. For access to the spreadsheet and for any hazardous waste questions please contact [email protected].
Biohazardous waste is picked up from the veterinary technology building, the Chappell Family Building for Nursing and Population Health, the Ken Lepin Science and Health Sciences Building, and the medical clinic as needed. Waste must be properly packaged for pickup. Contact Risk and Safety Services ([email protected]) for assistance with arranging pick by a service provider.
