Become a Host Family

homestay

Give the gift of a Canadian experience

The TRU Homestay program offers a unique opportunity for your entire family. By hosting an international student, you open your home to a world of diversity and enriching experiences. Take advantage of this rewarding opportunity and create lifelong memories.

Take your first step here

Most of our international students come from the Pacific Rim and Southeast Asia. We are also seeing an increasing number of students from Mexico, South and Central America as well as from Eurasia. Students come to TRU for English language training and post-secondary education. They usually understand the English language better than they speak it. Homestay offers the students an excellent opportunity to develop and practice their conversational skills, as well as to experience Canadian culture in a friendly family setting. More information about the short-term programs and students who come to International Training Centre (ITC) you can find here.

TRU World's Homestay program is flexible enough to allow a family to host a diverse group of students. Depending on their schedule, a host family can choose between a long-term (semester) students as well as/or short-term students throughout the year. We, at TRU World, are very thankful to all our community members in Kamloops who provide a “home away from home" to many international students!

Guidelines and Expectations for TRU Host Families

Host families are expected to provide the students with reasonable daily requirements. Each student should have a private room with adequate furnishings. They should be treated as a member of the family, sharing meals and participating in the family's routine and social activities. The student should have reasonable access to all the household facilities.

Host families are not expected to give international students special treatment as such. However, these students will appreciate warm and friendly support from their Canadian hosts.

All TRU host families are required to complete a Police Information Check (formerly Criminal record check) with the RCMP prior to the placement of a student in their home. Each individual over the age of 19 years that resides in the home must complete the Police Information Check. The costs will be covered by TRU World. The Police Information Checks are completed either in person with the local RCMP detachment or online. Forms and/or additional information can be obtained by contacting TRU World homestay team at [email protected].

We will be happy to provide you with more information and explain how our program works.
