Repair Café
TRU Repair Café and Clothing Exchange open to Kamloops community
Do you have small household appliances or clothing that need to be repaired or altered, including heavy-duty workwear or outdoor gear? Instead of throwing them away, bring your items to the upcoming TRU Repair Café:
Date: Thursday, Nov. 21
Time: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Location (on campus): Library Makerspace, located on the first floor of the Brown Family House of Learning, behind Tim Hortons
Repair Cafés are part of a growing international grassroots movement that aim to reduce waste, overconsumption and planned obsolescence.
The event will also feature a clothing exchange - featuring cold-weather items. Everyone is welcome to take home up to two items at no cost.
TRU and Kamloops community members can drop off clean and gently-used cold-weather items (coats, sweaters, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, mitts/gloves, scarves, toques, etc.) at the Sustainability Office, the Library Makerspace, or the Student Experience office in Old Main (room 1468; under the main stairs on Student Street, next to the security office).
Items accepted:
- Clothing and textiles that need typical repairs. If a new zipper is needed, every attempt will be made to
facilitate this, but there are no guarantees.
- Workwear and outdoor gear (heavy clothing, packs, sleeping bags, etc.)
- Small household electronic appliances and electrical items (lamps, kitchen appliances, vacuums, coffee makers, etc.)
- Small household electronic appliances and electrical items (lamps, kitchen appliances, vacuums, coffee makers, etc.)
- Wood furniture that needs simple repairs (loose parts, missing screws, etc.)
- Bicycles
Items not accepted:
- Footwear
- Gas or other fuel-powered devices
- Computers or cellphones
- Anything that needs two or more people to carry
Repair Café volunteers will assess whether your item is reparable or whether it should be sustainably recycled or disposed of.
This event is organized by the TRU Sustainability Office, TRU Library Makerspace and Repair Café Kamloops. All TRU and Kamloops community members are welcome, and no registration is required.

How we fit in with sustainable development goals
4: Quality Education
This goal aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education is available and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The Repair Café provides a platform for informal education by teaching people practical skills related to repairing and maintaining everyday items. This event encourages lifelong learning by fostering a culture of curiosity and continuous improvement.
11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
This goal aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
The Repair Café contributes to this goal by providing a space that invites all members of the community to participate in sustainable practices. Participants work together as a community to contribute to their collective sustainability and develop strong bonds.
12: Responsible Consumption and Production
This goal aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
The Repair Café enables people to expand the lifespan of their items through repairs, contributing to responsible consumption and production. Repairing instead of discarding reduces waste, conserves resources, and minimizes the environmental impact of consumer goods. By actively combating the culture of planned obsolescence, where products are intentionally designed with a limited lifespan, Repair Cafés contribute to a more sustainable consumption pattern.
